I have been considering whether to purchase another mechanical keyboard, the Logitech Mechanical MX Mini. I got my first mechanical keyboard, the Logitech Mechanical MX, last year and instantly fell in love with it. It provided excellent tactile feedback, a nice typing sound, and an overall pleasant typing experience.
However, since I own a few expensive membrane keyboards that I'm not fully utilizing, I've been telling myself that the desire to buy another mechanical keyboard is just impulsive shopping. After all, a mechanical keyboard is just another keyboard that provides better tactile touch, it doesn’t have any practical advantages comparing to all the other keyboards that I already have. It is overrated.
That was until I read an article that said mechanical keyboards can improve typing accuracy and speed. I began to wonder why that was the case. While making someone feel good is one thing, there must be something objective about the mechanical keyboard that helps us type faster. I then start to explore more on this topic from the first principle.
After thinking deeper about it, I realized it's because of the feedback. Blind typists rely on looking at and feeling the keyboard to know if they are typing the correct characters. Mechanical keyboards provide different types of feedbacks (the sound, the feel etc) that can improve typing accuracy and speed. Considering these feedbacks as signals, these signals can fully utilize the other senses that we have, which naturally improve accuracy and speed.
Without all these, it will be like driving a car with no force feedback on the steering wheel. It can be dangerous because you are solely relying on visuals to determine if you're turning the right corner and staying on the right track. Similarly, a keyboard's tactile touch doesn't just feel good, it has practical use.
Furthermore, this topic highlights the importance of receiving feedback from others on your work. It is crucial to note that feedback plays a significant role in the process of developing one's work. Feedback can come from various sources, such as colleagues, mentors, or even online communities. By receiving feedback, one can gain valuable insights and perspectives on their work, which can lead to new ideas and improvements. Moreover, feedback can also foster a sense of collaboration and communication, as it encourages individuals to share their thoughts and opinions in a constructive manner.
