Book Summary
I was drawn to this book due to my enjoyment of 長安的荔枝. The author uses well-known "history" as a canvas to express his imagination, much like in this book. Even though Journey to the West isn't actual history, it's a familiar story for every Chinese child. The author cleverly "unveils" what happens behind the scenes in Journey to the West.
The book humorously and creatively offers a fresh interpretation of Journey to the West. All the mighty gods are portrayed as ordinary workers, and the grand Journey to the West tale is depicted as a show. The protagonist "Great White Golden Star" must collaborate with various other gods to stage this show, leading to a host of dramas and office dynamics amongst these gods. The author describes these dynamics in a humorous way that office workers can readily relate to.
I also appreciate the story between the Monkey King and his counterpart, the six ears macaque. It might seem ridiculous that people can harbor grudges and hold onto past events for such a long time, but from my personal experience, it's fairly common. Buddha advised us to let go and not obsess over things. This book echoes this wisdom through its various smaller stories.
